Arches

Somehow, Arches National Park has become a spiritual home for me. My son and I were lucky enough to take a road trip last year and pass through this magical place. Since then, I’ve never stopped thinking about it. Although he has had a few opportunities to visit the park since our original trip, an entire year had gone by before we had another chance to experience it together while driving him back to college. As soon as we started our way up through the first twists of the entrance road, we were both in tears. Our tradition, after only two visits, is to go first at sunset and then again at sunrise the next day, with the Beatles or solo George Harrison playing constantly. Neither of us is exactly sure why it resonates so deeply, but my guess is that it somehow represents possibility, new beginnings, hope, and beauty in the world. We tend to drive over to the Windows section of the park first but on this visit, we spent a little more time on Park Avenue. Breathtaking. I am already looking forward to my next journey there and I’m quite confident that my young man, who turned 20 just after this trip, feels precisely the same way.
